We’re type designers,
perfectionists, trackers, and
kerners.

Communication Designers at the College for Creative Studies make things that you see and interact with everyday. We design physical objects, digital experiences, emotive messages that connect and communicate with specific people in mind. Every project starts with a communication goal(s) and research into content/context to shape our thinking from concept development, to design strategy, to finished prototypes. We make books, packaging, corporate branding for dynamic and static environments, magazines, way-finding signs, websites, mobile apps, navigational systems physical and digital, user interfaces, movie title sequences, and exhibitions at museums or trade shows. Many projects evolve to connect with architectural spaces, urban planning, mobility, and social practice.

Our department mantra is think, make, and play; and our interdisciplinary curriculum helps our students create design solutions that move beyond the expected using a variety of digital and analog tools needed to communicate their ideas. Our students are very resourceful and curious, finding inspiration from simple drawing tools to mini computing devices, discovering that their creative potential is limitless. Communication Design Students draw, paint, print, type, cut, photograph, print, connect, wire, code, move, gesture, touch, video, capture, record, document, write, and build dynamic design solutions for the 21st century.
